NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Nashville native, John Royal, brought "Ghost" to the stage, and now he's bringing it to life for kids at school.
The 8th grade students of Issac Litton Middle School, were given a special field trip, to Nashville's Children's Theater recently.
The play they saw, was "Ghost," the story of a young African American student, who while talented in sports, found that his personal life often interfered. It's one part of a four book series.
The students were required to read it in class, and were excited to see it performed.
But they were even more excited, when the director of the play, Jon Royal, came to their school to talk about the production.
Many of the students were surprised to find he is also African American and grew up not far from their neighborhoods.
Royal spoke of how he was insistent that the play represent young people of color.
The students we spoke with, were impressed with the play and the director, and some said they were encouraged to read the other books in the series as a result.
