Drunk Driver Leads Police Chase Through 3 Counties

SMITHVILLE, Tenn. - A suspected drunk driver refused to pull over and ended up leading police through three middle Tennessee counties.

The chase began around midnight Friday and lasted through part of early Saturday morning.

Police said the incident started in Watertown after officers tried to stop the suspect. Authorities said the man headed east on Interstate 40 then south on Highway 56.

The pursuit wound through Wilson, Smith, and Dekalb Counties, and at one point, the driver's speed topped 90 miles per hour.

The chase finally ended when the driver crashed his Nissan Frontier on Hurricane Bridge in Smithville.

Officials said the driver was not seriously hurt. His name has not yet been released.
