More than 20 dogs have been rescued from hoarding-like and unsafe conditions inside a store in Macon County.
Officials with the Animal Rescue Corps said they assisted the Macon County Sheriff’s Office in the rescue.
The dogs were found in the Old Country Store in Lafayette. They said the sheriff went to the store to serve a notice, but heard noises from inside and found the dogs.
Officials believed the dogs had not been fed since before Christmas. Some were found dead, but it was unclear how many.
They were found in a dangerous scene because debris and feces was found throughout the whole area.
Rescue officials said it was the worst situation they’ve seen in months.
Animal Rescue Corps is no stranger to responding to rescues, but they say they've never had to respond to five rescues in a span of three days.
The group recently moved to this new location in Lebanon, giving them a bigger building to accommodate even the littlest of animals.
"The owners are animal lovers and they've donated this space for us," said Scotlund Haisley with Animal Rescue Corps. "If we need more space, I'm sure they'll give us more space."
