A person was hit and killed in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the Nashville Airport.

It happened around 2 p.m. at Mile Marker 214 on I-40 West. The road was reopened around 6 p.m.

According to officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department, 20-year-old Alvaro Bartlett of Elm Hill Pike was killed.

Bartlett was riding with his mother, 36-year-old Letta Thomas in her 2003 Ford Focus.  She said she thought she heard something fall off her car, and pulled over onto the shoulder.

That's when Barlett walked into the lane of traffic to get the item, when he was hit hit by a yellow pickup truck with grey primer on it.

Officers said the truck drove away from the scene.

Bartlett was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he later died.

Anyone with information about the driver of the pickup truck was asked to call Hit & Run investigators at 615-862-7713 or Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
