NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Students in Rutherford and Cheatham Counties are headed back to the classroom.

Cheatham County students and families were given the option of in-person or virtual learning. Students in grades 1-9 will make their return to classes Thursday for a half-day (10:45 a.m. dismissal) and the first full day of instruction for grades 1-12 will be Friday.

Students in grades Pre-K-4 will return to a traditional model and middle and high schools (grades 5-12) will operate on a hybrid model, which is a mixture of in-person and virtual learning, through Labor Day.

The same option of traditional or distance learning was given to students in Rutherford County.

The district had so many families choose a virtual option that school officials delayed their return to the classroom.

The district was set to begin on Aug. 10, but officials moved the date back to the 13th in order to give teachers and schools additional time to prepare for the many students who chose to learn virtually. As of Aug. 5, about 40% of the student population, more than 19,000 students, had chosen distance learning.

Masks are required for all Rutherford County students, staff and bus drivers.
