MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WTVF) — Dozens if not hundreds came out to pay their respects to Charlie Daniels, as the "best there's ever been" turned down Mt. Juliet Road for the last time.
Daniels lived in Mount Juliet and was a big supporter of the community, with the city's most popular park named in his honor.
Those who gathered along the road to wave goodbye said that Charlie Daniels was someone they called a patriot, who died coincidentally just two days after Independence Day. Even though he was born out of state, many claimed him as a son of Mt. Juliet.
"We have lived in Mt. Juliet for 14 years, and it’s home," said Jennifer Robeson of Mt. Juliet. "My kids grew up going to Charlie Daniels Park. His name is synonymous with Mt. Juliet."
