An 8-year-old who protected his younger sisters and other children from a gunman who opened fire inside their Antioch church was honored by the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee.
"We try to select Scouts for the Scouts of the Year Awards that have done something very special," said Scout Executive Larry Brown. "They've overcome obstacles, done something heroic, done something very special, and obviously Micah did something very special."
Micah was in the middle of children's worship when Emanuel Samson started shooting inside the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ. He helped adults barricade the door with furniture, then he turned to comfort the other children in the room.
"I could hear him calming the little ones down, because there was five in there," said Micah's grandmother Terry Carter. "He was just talking to them. One of the last things I heard him say is pray."
Micah was named the Cub Scout of the Year. He said he plans to continue his participation in Boy Scouts until he earns the Eagle Scout status.
