NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The Battle of Nashville monument, which honors both Civil War and World War I soldiers, was vandalized with red spray paint.

The vandalism was reported on Monday, but it's unclear as to when it occurred. Battle of Nashville Trust President Jim Kay said the damage will cost at least $10,000 to repair and the organization is prepared to prosecute.

"This is not a confederate monument. This is a monument that is dedicated to the dead of both sides from the battle of Nashville and [World War I]," said Kay.

The trust website says the 30-foot obelisk is made of white granite and bronze and is often referred to as the “Peace Monument."

"The Battle of Nashville was one of the greatest victories by the United States it was in 1864," said Kay. "The critical next to last battle in the civil war in the South."

As of Monday afternoon, most of the graffiti had already been removed.
