AR-15 Rifles; What Is Or Isn't An Assault Rifle

The picture of the rifle used by the suspected killer, Travis Reinking, at the Waffle House Sunday morning has made its rounds on local and national media.

The shooter in the Parkland Florida massacre also used an AR-15. It's the gun of choice in recent mass shootings, but is it an assault rifle?

Guns and weapons expert Buford Tune, "it's a semi automatic rifle that's all he had but because it looked like a military full auto, then they're going to call it assault."

Fully automatic, that's what differentiates what isn't or is an assault rifle. “An assault rifle would be classified through the military, be fully automatic or something to this affect,” Tune explained.

Tune adds that AR does not stand for assault rifle. "It's armalite rifle." he said.

Fully automatic or not this most recent shooting has local leaders calling out elected officials. "There are weapons of war that are in our community right now and our leaders won't step up to do what's right to protect us," Mayor David Briley said during a prayer vigil for the shooting victims Monday.

The gun debate will rage on and Tune has this advice. "Educate yourself on what this stuff is before you start talking about it," Tune said.
