NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — According to an independent count of homicides kept by NewsChannel 5, the number of criminal homicides dropped in 2019, compared to the previous year.

The NewsChannel 5 count shows there were at least 76 cases of criminal homicide in 2019.

That would mark a drop from the year before -- Metro Police reported 88 deaths in 2018 and 107 deaths in 2017.

The final reported criminal homicide of 2019 came just minutes before midnight, when police say 18-year-old Marchellos Devens was found with several gunshot wounds inside a Nissan Altima stopped on the side of an exit ramp on I-65 South at Rosa Parks Blvd.

Devens was taken to the hospital but later died. Police are still investigating the motive.
