Sometimes a visit from Meals-on-Wheels is the only visit he'll have all day.

"If you ever go through a whole day without seeing another person. It's devastating, really," said Philip Shafer.

Mid-Cumberland Meals-on-Wheels has been delivering food to seniors like Shafer for more than four decades.

"We serve a hot, well-balanced meals, five days a week," said Joanie French.

French says every day they deliver 50 meals to seniors who might otherwise go without. For some, like Shafer, it's poor health, for others it's a lack of transportation, being on a fixed income, or having no family to help.

Fairview is just one of 17 sites making these daily deliveries. Shafer say the food is good -- but the company is even better.

Mid-Cumberland Meals-on-Wheels and Philip Shafer each received a $1,000 gift card provided by Kroger as part of NewsChannel5's "Compassion in Action" project.
