Having grown up in Mt. Juliet with News Channel 5 always on the television, Heather Mathis is thrilled to be back home and a part of the Storm 5 weather team.
Heather can remember the deadly April 1998 tornado outbreak across Middle Tennessee that sparked her fascination with meteorology. Heather is a graduate of Mt. Juliet High School. There, she got her first "job" in broadcasting working for the Bear News Network! Heather attended Middle Tennessee State University, and was a weather anchor for the student-run television station throughout college. She earned her degree from MTSU in Broadcast Journalism. Heather also earned a second degree in Meteorology from Mississippi State University.
Heather started her career at WBBJ-TV in Jackson, TN before moving to WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama. Growing up in the area, Heather knows how important keeping the community safe and informed during severe weather is. Her passion is making sure viewers feel prepared and ready for the day through accurate and informative forecasts.
In her spare time she enjoys reading, spending time with her husband Ryan, and being back home with her friends and family. Heather loves to be out in the community, so if you ever see her, feel free to say hi!
