Campus police have been called in to investigate after several nooses were found hanging from a tree at Austin Peay State University.
Officials said the APSU Police Department received complaints from several people about the nooses. Officers found six nooses of different colors arranged in the color of a rainbow around 5 p.m. Monday.
The ropes were removed. School officials later said the display was part of an art project. (More: Nooses On APSU Campus Part Of Art Project)
APSU President Alisa White released a statement late Monday night.
“This incident is deeply disturbing and is hurtful to our University community… Regardless of the intent, the display has no place on our campus. I am saddened, and I am sorry for the hurt and offense this has caused and want our students, faculty, and staff to know that it will not be tolerated.”
