Rutherford County emergency crews spent the overnight hours into Tuesday morning working to clear the scene of a semi-truck fire and subsequent fuel spill.

The incident happened at about 9:15 p.m. Monday on I-840 east at mile marker 55, which is just east of I-24.

Investigators said the entire truck caught fire and about 200 gallons of fuel leaked into a nearby storm drain. Two people and their three dogs were able to get out of the truck safely.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, traffic from both directions had to be diverted off of the interstate for several hours.
