Women of Middle Tennessee were honored at the annual "Phenomenal Woman: That's Me" celebration.
Scarritt Bennett Center launched “Phenomenal Woman: That’s Me” a celebration that recognizes the contributions of women in art, advocacy and justice, inspired by the life and work of Maya Angelou.
NewsChannel 5's own Vicki Yates emceed the event Thursday night.
Reverend Dr. Judy Cummings, Maryanna Clark, Nancy Crutcher, Reverend Becca Stevens, and Dr. Martha Sue Thrasher were all chosen by colleagues for various awards.
In addition to honoring the five women, organizers hoped to inspire younger women.
"We have a program Bell H. Bennett which is recognizing outstanding leadership in young college women for them to be here this evening to see those women is outstanding as well as a lot of young women. I have a 12 yaer old daughter so for her to be able to see these women as examples is something very very positive," said Keith Belton.
This was the first year of the Phenomenal Women Awards, and they hope to continue it next year.
