Members of the bipartisan Davidson County legislative delegation have called on Judge Casey Moreland to resign.
In a statement released Friday afternoon, the delegation said:
"The bi-partisan Davidson County legislative delegation respects the independence of the judiciary and the separation of powers between the three branches of government. However, sometimes it is incumbent upon us as legislators to protect the integrity of our justice system.
We, the undersigned members of the delegation, call upon Casey Moreland to resign his judgeship. By remaining on the bench he threatens the integrity of our courts."
Those members were as follows:
- Representative Bill Beck, Delegation Chair
- Representative Darren Jernigan, Delegation Vice-Chair
- Senator Steven Dickerson, Delegation Secretary
- Speaker Beth Harwell
- Representative Bo Mitchell
- Representative Brenda Gilmore
- Senator Ferrell Haile
- Representative Harold Love
- Representative Jason Powell
- Senator Jeff Yarbro
- Representative John Ray Clemmons
- Representative Mike Stewart
House Speaker Beth Harwell also sent a letter Friday afternoon to the state boards that regulate judges and lawyers regarding the Moreland case.
The letter was directed to the Chris Craft, chair of the Board of Judicial Conduct, and Michael U. King, chair of the Board of Professional Responsibility.
"Tennesseans expect and deserve their judiciary to act in a fair and impartial manner, and the troubling accusations against Mr. Moreland are clearly contrary to these expectations," Harwell wrote.
