A group of young men from Hickman County found a GoPro camera while diving at Rock Island state park last week, and have posted some of the pictures hoping to find the owner.
Ben Barton and a small group of teenage boys from the Narrow Gate Foundation ministry were hiking at the popular state park on June 28 when a young girl asked them for help after she dropped her GoPro into the small swimming hole beneath one of the park’s waterfalls.
After spending a few minutes diving in nearly 14ft. of water, Ben managed to find a GoPro but it didn’t belong to the girl they were trying to help.
“Right before we jumped in this girl was jumping off with a selfie stick and her GoPro and she lost her GoPro, so we were looking for hers and came across this one,” he recalled.
“This was not the one we were looking for,” he said holding the GoPro Hero3 and a plastic waterproof case covered in algae.
When they arrived home Ben gave the GoPro to his coworker Colin Smith who quickly discovered the small camera was filled with someone else’s life moments.
“People buy GoPro’s because they want memories and they want them lasting and from their own point of view and when I look at that I think I would want that footage back,” Colin said looking at the footage he recovered.
Through examining files Colin was able to determine that the camera fell off a strap attached to the chest of a young man who had jumped into a water fall at Rock Island State Park on April 23, 2016.
It sat at the bottom of the water for more than two months before being found.
“I felt like if this was my GoPro I would want it back,” he added.
Colin has posted that footage and a picture of the man he believes to be the owner of Facebook, a post that has been shared more than 500 times but still no luck.
“We still haven’t found him,” Colin said.
The GoPro had nearly 600 videos and pictures on in.
Files show the owner traveled to the Grand Canyon on March 27, 2016 and then to the Hoover Dam on the night of March 28, 2016.
“Somebody must know who this is”
