Officials on the scene said 21-year-old Alexander Peden was traveling on McCrory Lane and was trying to get onto Highway 70 when his car was struck.
Surveillance video from a gas station across the street captured the moment of impact.
The force of the collision pushed the car about a quarter of a mile down the tracks – the equivalent of about three to four football fields.
Peden was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.
