A man died after being stabbed in the neck in east Nashville.

Officials with Metro Nashville Police said a neighbor noticed the man lying by a South 4th Street dumpster shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday.

That person called police saying they believed someone had been shot. However, when police arrived they didn't find any gunshot wound and instead found an adult male with a gash to his throat.

Authorities later identified the victim as 45-year-old Tremayne Cross, who had been living with his girlfriend in the J.C. Napier public housing development.

First responders attempted to stop the bleeding until an ambulance arrived. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died during surgery.

The investigation remained ongoing. Authorities have requested that anyone who may have been with Cross Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, or anyone with any information, call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
