A Humphreys County deputy shot a man with a bean bag round after officials say the suspect held a 4-year-old boy hostage with a knife.

Deputies said Matthew Clements was arrested Wednesday on charges including aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.

Sheriff Chris Davis said the incident started when the suspect began throwing rocks at a Waverly home, where a woman was inside with her children.

Deputies said Clements then forced his way inside, making the woman and another child leave while he held the 4-year-old at knife-point.

"Because he was bloody, covered in sweat, blood he was naked and had gatorade and water poured all over him it was a very task for us to grab a hold of him," said Chief Deputy Rob Edwards, Humphreys County Sheriff's Office.

Arriving officials said when the suspect didn't comply with authorities, Chief Deputy Rob Edwards shot Clements with a bean bag from a 12-gauge shotgun.

"I've never had to shoot anybody with it. And I can't think of a situation where I've actually had to shoot somebody," said Chief Edwards.

The child was released and wasn't hurt. Clements was treated for minor injuries. It's unknown if he has an attorney.

Deputies said they are glad they were able to end a dangerous situation without using deadly force.
