A man who was killed after a robbery attempt at a local apartment complex has been identified.

Authorities said the incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Iroquois Apartments on Old Hickory Boulevard in Bellevue.

The victim who was fatally wounded has been identified as 29-year-old Billy Ray Plunk, who police confirmed lived at the complex.

According to a preliminary investigation, Plunk and his brother had just gotten to the apartments when they were approached by a gunman.

The gunman allegedly demanded money. According to Plunk's brother, neither of them complied.

Police said the gunman shot Plunk moments later.

Plunk was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he passed away.

“It's really scary, really scary, especially since my kids walk through this apartment complex and play all the time,” said resident Jessica Ballard.

Officials have described the gunman as a black male, standing around 6’ tall. He was wearing a red bandana and fled from the scene in a silver SUV driven by a white male.

Detectives said anyone with information on either man’s identity or whereabouts has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
