A California man was shot and killed while running from an apparent robbery attempt Monday in downtown Nashville.

Officials with Metro Nashville Police said 30-year-old Teddy Grasset and 28-year-old Larry Niehues, both of Los Angeles, were walking down 4th Avenue South near the Country Music Hall of Fame when a Chevrolet Impala pulled up behind them.

The two men began to run away in opposite directions when a gunman from the car opened fire.

Grasset ran towards Demonbreun Street and was shot once. He died after being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Niehues was not hurt.

Niehues told police the men had been on Broadway and were planning to take a ride-share back to a Murfreesboro Pike motel where they had been staying.

"This appears to be one of these instances where two men were walking towards Korean Veterans Boulevard when this Impala pulled up behind them," said Kris Mumford of the Metro Nashville Police Department. "They both ran, unfortunately he was shot and killed."

Detectives said they are looking for three people in a silver Chevrolet Impala with a sunroof and spoiler.

Nearby surveillance cameras captured two of the suspects standing outside the vehicle at the time of the shooting. The driver apparently stayed in the car during the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 615-74-CRIME.
