A man has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing a Portland mother in front of their seven-month-old child.

"And that baby, that beautiful baby has no parents," April Riley said about her granddaughter who she helped save during Monday night's shooting.

Riley's son, Ethan Reid is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, 20-year-old Kaylah Hodges - Riley says Hodges had been living with her since the birth of the couple's daughter seven months ago.

The heartbroken mother and grandmother was just feet away when her son pulled the trigger.

"Kaylah handed me the baby and got around me and Ethan shoved me and the baby back and went after her and then I heard a 'pop' and when I got to the edge of the hallway I saw her fall out the front door," April said through tears.

"I want her back, I have prayed all night to get her back," she added.

According to investigators, Hodges and Reid had gotten into an argument at the residence. Reid allegedly showed up at the home with a gun.

Reid reportedly attempted to take his own life but was stopped by a neighbor, who lives next door. That person was able to restrain him until police arrived.

The baby was not hurt.

Hodges, who attended Portland High School, had recently started taking classes at Volunteer State Community College.

Reid was arrested and is being held in the Allen County Jail on $1 million bond - he's set to appear before a judge next week.
