A historic, plantation-era home in Gallatin has been destroyed after fire broke out early Wednesday morning.

Crews responded to the scene on Newton Lane shortly before 4:30 a.m. and found the home fully engulfed. Heavy flames could be seen for a considerable distance.

The official cause of the fire remains unknown, but officials said lightning was the likely origin.

The home was built in the 1800s and has been abandoned for many years. However, many valuable antiques were destroyed.

Firefighters said there was nothing they could do to save it.

The home was located in a heavily wooded area off the road. Crews were working to make sure the blaze doesn't spread to neighboring areas.

No one was hurt.
