Police responded to a street near J.E. Moss Elementary School after a crossing guard was struck by a vehicle.

The incident was reported just before 7:30 a.m. Monday near Richards Road and Dowdy Drive.

Officials with Metro Nashville Police said 58-year-old Lemuel Frazier was taken to Southern Hills Medical Center with serious injuries.

"He's in total control of the corner, but it gets extremely busy," resident Paul Tomlin said. "School up here, middle school. You've got this elementary school, it's loaded with children in the morning and in the evening."

"He had just finished crossing the last child, he had a group of kids come across the street," Sgt. Mark Denton said.

Denton oversees the metro crossing guard division. "I'm confident someone is going to give us some better information because you all know how busy it is out there. You can't have a crash like that and somebody not see it," Denton said.

The suspect vehicle was described as being a red, smaller model Chevrolet with a side mirror missing.
