Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed a child has passed away from injuries sustained in a crash in Rutherford County.
The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 24 near mile marker 76 by Fortress Boulevard around 3:45 p.m. Thursday.
According to reports, a Honda Civic, driven by 57-year-old Thomas Edward Rogers, failed to see a Honda Odyssey van in the next lane, driven by 36-year-old Tomas Eduardo Guitierrez-Compos.
Rogers' car struck the driver's side of Guitierrez-Compos' van, also hitting the front left tire. Guitierrez-Compos' van then left the road, drove into a ditch, overturned, and hit several trees.
Guitierrez-Compos was injured in the crash. In his vehicle were 35-year-old Araceli Pizgno and two juvenile passengers ages 2 and 9. The extent of their injuries was unknown.
A five-year-old in Guitierrez-Compos' vehicle was also injured in the crash and later died from those injuries. The child's name was not released.
Rogers was not injured. He has been charged with improper passing and due care. More charges were pending, according to reports.
The right lane was blocked to eastbound drivers for a couple of hours. Westbound traffic experienced rubbernecking delays.
Crews said the roadway was cleared before 6 p.m.
