MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WTVF) — A house fire in Murfreesboro took the life of one person Monday.

Murfreesboro Fire officials say the fire broke out at a home on the 900 block of Kirkwood Avenue just after 6 p.m.

Heavy smoke was still pouring from the roof and eaves of the home when fire crews arrived.

The person who called dispatchers about the fire said they thought someone was still inside. Firefighters quickly went inside, but weren't able to get to the victim due unsafe conditions amide a heavy fire and extreme heat.

According to Battalion Chief Mark McCluskey, the fire took quite a while to extinguish.

The victim's body was found once the fire was out and conditions were safe to re-enter the home. The victim was later identified as 81-year-old Jack E. Forrest.

The cause of the fire is unknown. The Fire Marshal was called to conduct a routine investigation. McCluskey said the Fire Marshal will perform an initial investigation tonight, but will be back out in the morning to continue.

The three surviving residents have been displaced and will be assisted by the American Red Cross.
