A fire at the Smith County landfill sent black smoke billowing into the air. Witnesses said it could be seen for miles.
Officials from the Smith County Rescue Squad said three fire departments responded to the fire at 370 Landfill Road in Carthage around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
The director of the Smith County Emergency Management Agency, Bobby Carter, said the fire was put out shortly before 6 p.m.
Carter said the fire was contained within the landfill and there was no danger to the public.
More than an half-acre of the landfill burned.
