Divorce Papers Served, Even On Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a day where people buy flowers, chocolate, jewelry, and cards for the people they love, but like any other day of the year, it is also a day where some people are served divorce papers, or have to go to court.

"There are probably as many reasons people get divorced as there are people get married," Phil Newman, partner at Puryear, Newman + Morton in Franklin, said.

Newman said many people wait until January or February to file for divorce to keep their families from having to deal with the divorce during the holiday season, and some people also wait until the new year due to tax reasons.

"If they're married, the entire calendar year for example in 2016, get divorced in January of 2017, they can file jointly for 2016," Newman said.

Newman added that divorce papers are not delivered on Valentine's Day often, at least from his office, and he thinks that's a good thing. "I think people who are the happiest are the ones who did it the right way and try to keep the fussing and fighting to a minimum both during the divorce and after," he said.
