A trench at Welch College in Sumner County collapsed, killing the person inside.
Officials with Sumner County EMS said their efforts moved from a rescue to a recovery around 3:40 p.m. Friday.
Officials said the man was was repairing a water line next to the gym when the trench he was working in collapsed, trapping him under ground. His identity was released.
The construction was being done by Southland Constructors.
